01 — The Problem

A crisis buried in plain sight.

Sri Lanka generates thousands of tons of municipal solid waste daily. Plastic and rubber — non-degradable and difficult to safely recycle — accumulate in open dumps and unlined landfills with no long-term plan.

In April 2017, the collapse of the Meethotamulla landfill claimed 32 lives and displaced hundreds of families. It remains a stark reminder of what happens when waste is treated as an afterthought rather than a national infrastructure priority.

We built Olive Green International to turn that liability into fuel.

Olive Green International (Pvt) Ltd was established in Battaramulla to address Sri Lanka's escalating municipal plastic accumulation and heavy reliance on imported furnace fuels. Registered under the Companies Act of Sri Lanka, our team combines local research expertise with thermal process engineering to convert non-recyclable polymer waste into high-calorific industrial energy products.

What is pyrolysis oil and how is it produced from plastic waste?

Pyrolysis oil is a high-grade synthetic fuel oil produced by thermal degradation of waste plastics and tires in an oxygen-free reactor at high temperatures (400-500°C), converting solid polymer waste into heavy fuel oil, carbon black, and combustible gas.

How does pyrolysis oil compare to heavy fuel oil (HFO) or furnace oil?

Pyrolysis oil has a gross calorific value (GCV) of ~10,200 kcal/kg, comparable to conventional industrial heavy fuel oil (HFO), but burns cleaner with lower sulfur content, offering a cost-effective and low-carbon alternative for industrial boilers, furnaces, and kilns.

What is the daily processing capacity of the Olive Green plant?

The plant is engineered with a modular batch-to-continuous pyrolysis system capable of processing up to 20 metric tons of municipal and industrial waste plastic per day, operating at 99% recycling efficiency with virtually zero landfill output.

What secondary products are generated besides pyrolysis fuel oil?

In addition to pyrolysis fuel oil, the process yields high-purity industrial carbon black (used in rubber manufacturing and pigments), refined paraffin wax, and non-condensable syngas recycled back to power the plant.
